DHRF's "Governing Dynamics"

There is extensive use of “Tooltips” text to support learning which do not seem to render on a Smartphone, so this site is best viewed via a computer’s HD monitor

1 Important Note

What is all this “Governing Dynamics” malarkey?

Malarkey ? “Malarkey means ‘nonsense’ or ‘rubbish’“

Inspired by the Russell Crowe film “A Beautiful Mind”

We were inspired by the sound of the expression “Governing Dynamics”; it seemed appropriate to describe how DHRF should operate, although the meaning in DHRF’s context is not the same as the meaning portrayed in the film…

What are DHRF’s “Governing Dynamics”?

Governing Dynamics: DHRF’s ‘Code of Conduct’, Ethics & M.O. (‘Modus Operandi’)

"Governing"...

… as in defining DHRF’s “Modus Operandi” (“M.O.”)

"Dynamics"...

… as in following rules that create “forces that produce movement or change” - “Dynamics”

And also “dynamic” as the rules may be updated from time-to-time in the light of experience…

(a) The Two Over-riding Principles

Principle: (1) Focus on Functionality

Why? A Detailed Discussion

(a)(1)Rule#1

Try to find/establish “Functional Equivalences”

A discussion here

(a)(1)Rule#2

If functionality can be observed, then there must be a mechanism somewhere to enable/implement that functionality…

(a)(1)Rule#3

Use the “The Engineers Equivalent to “Occam’s Razor” which is asking the question “What is the most likely” rather than asking “What is the simplest”

A discussion here

Principle: (2) Ignore Implementation Details

If you can…

Why? A Detailed Discussion

(a)(3) Distil Functionality from Implementation Detail

If you can…

(a)(b) Work STRICTLY to the “Scientific Method”

(1) Always accept the disciplines and contraints of the Scientific Method which has evolved over 100’s of years…   (2) Be very open-minded   (3) Assume nothing   (4) Fact-Find   (5) Ask Questions   (6) Make Enquiries   (7) Conduct Research   (8) Do not rule anything out   (9) Try to find any opposing views, consider them and try to (in)validate them…   (10) Is there a “big picture” to be found ?

(a)(c) Partition any analysis and other research efforts within the various “Problem Domains”

A Detailed Discussion

(a)(d) EXPLICITLY reference the Scientific Method Stages in the Research Work Streams

And elsewhere when/where appropriate…    An example:

Scientific Method Stage 1 - Make Descriptive Observations:

RWS02/:    “****“

(a)(e) Apply the simple Flow Principles - In order to work from within a Flow Channel

Flow Channel

(e) Be very EXPLICIT

Why? A Detailed Discussion

(f) DEFINE the Topic under discussion EXPLICITLY

A definition of DEFINE:

“A definition is a statement of the meaning of a term (a word, phrase, or other set of symbols). Definitions can be classified into two large categories, intensional definitions (which try to give the sense of a term) and extensional definitions (which try to list the objects that a term describes). Another important category of definitions is the class of ostensive definitions, which convey the meaning of a term by pointing out examples”    Sources: Wikipedia   (DHRF Emphasis)

(1) NEVER have a definition that is solely Ostensive

“A term may have many different senses and multiple meanings, and thus require multiple definitions”_    Source: Wikipedia

And so, given the above, it is often necessary to qualify a definition…

Like this example:

Where DHRF claims it “is pioneering a new branch of Computer Science

Quote: Or to put it formally: Computer Science: Computational Molecular Biology, which DH/DHRF defines as:

“The application of the known and established principles and practices of Computer Science and in particular of Software Engineering, to the functionality of DNA as a Data Stream which is a series or sequence of symbols in the chemical/biological/molecular domains…“

Important Note: There is already a well-established branch of Biology known as “Computational Molecular Biology” and/or “Computational Biology” :End-Quote

(g) Create an Object/Scope Statement at the start of each RWS & LWS

“Every RWS/LWS should at the very start include a statement saying what the RWS/LWS is looking to achieve, and its scope. In the case of an RWS, to support DHRF’s STEAM+ efforts it should state what the (potential) learning outcomes should/would be…“

(h) No satisfactory Definition? Create one !!

As is demonstrated in the section below, where satisfactory definitions of “Index”, “Look-up Table” and “Glossary” could not be found, so new definitions appropriate to DHRF’s work were created

(i) Maintain INDEXES

We struggled to find an adequate definition of an “index” and the best we could find is the definition below, which is solely ostensive and not satisfactory

Source: Cambridge Dictionary

In essense, an index is a Lookup-Table (“LUT”) and we struggled to find a satisfactory definition of Lookup-Table as most definitions were computer-centric and even then were not satisfactory either…

So here is DHRF’s own definition of an index:

“An Index is a list of items (normally ordered alphabetically) which are references to a number of possible search outcomes elsewhere”

or to put it another way: “It is a list of pointers to information elsewhere”

(j) Maintain GLOSSARIES

Glossary: “an alphabetical list, with meanings, of the words or phrases in a text that are difficult to understand; a glossary of technical terms”   Source: Cambridge Dictionary

Here is DHRF’s own definition of a glossary:

A glossary is very similar to a Lookup-Table; the difference is that rather than being “a list of pointers to information elsewhere”, the information is contained within the list itself

(k) No Claim without a CITATION (or two)

Any claim made by DHRF without at least one reputable citation is scientifically worthless…

A Detailed Discussion

(l) Use “Ancient Wisdoms”…

… as and when appropriate

(l)(1) Ask and you will receive

(l)(2) Seek and you will find (EW Vid#10/2 “If you don’t look you won’t find…)

(l)(3) Knock and you will enter

A Detailed Discussion

(m) Use “Modern Wisdoms”…

… otherwise known as “quotations”

A Detailed Discussion

(n) Try to see the “Big Picture”…

The Big Picture: “the most important facts about a situation and the effects of that situation on other things”   Source: Cambridge Dictionary

(o) Keep it Simple…

A Detailed Discussion

(p) Eliminate Ego…

A Detailed Discussion

(q) Always Occupy the “Moral High Ground”…

(r) Always be Transparent…

(s) Maintain a “No-Blame Culture”…

A Detailed Discussion

(t) “Fact Find” as much as possible…

Data Protection Issues

DHRF is registered under the Data Protection Act 20182 via the Information Commissioners Office under registration ZB053120

We will NEVER sell personal data. We will never reveal personal data without explicit permission and/or as required by law

Use of “Cookies”

At the moment, DHRF does not use Cookies
However, it may be necessary in the future to use simple cookies to manage any member log-ins, etc

Important Note !!

DHRF.NET is a scientific & learning web site. The Research Work Streams are a inclusive, dynamic Scientific Journal, hosting live and on-going Scientific Research which DHRF calls a “DNA “Research-in-Action” site”

Given this, obviously DHRF cannot, and does not support and/or encourage Pseudoscience in any shape or form…

DHRF does not support or promote “Creationism” or “Creationists” because it is Pseudoscience with no scientific basis (and therefore outside of the scope of Science)

DHRF does not support or promote “Conspiracy Theories” or “Conspiracy Theorists” because it is corrosive and very mentally unhealthy “junk thinking” that might even be masquarading as Pseudoscience but with no scientific basis (and therefore outside of the scope of Science)    Detailed discussion

In life there are loads of nice, warm, fuzzy things or concepts to believe in like Father Christmas or the Easter Bunny, but all these things are outside of the scope/remit of a scientific website…

  1. In view of DHRF’s commitment to support learning, there is a much higher “learning content” in the Research Work Streams & elsewhere than would otherwise be the case… Please be aware of that

  2. UK Implementation of the GDPR “UK GDPR” “Under the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018, existing and relevant EU law was transposed into local law upon completion of the transition, and the GDPR was amended by statutory instrument to remove certain provisions no longer needed due to the UK’s non-membership in the EU. Thereafter, the regulation is referred to as ‘UK GDPR’  2

  3. And DHRF will enforce this ruthlessly…
